Notices Sunday 24th May 2020

Happy Easter as we continue to celebrate the 50 days of Easter.

This time between Ascension Day and Pentecost is a special season for prayer.  Having seen Jesus enter the glory of his life within the Godhead, the disciples stayed together in continual prayer waiting for the promised gift of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel for this Sunday, we hear Jesus praying for them and for all who will be his disciples in time to come. We live our lives now knowing that Jesus is with us, concerned for us, praying for us to the Father, loving us and pouring out the gift of the Holy Spirit into our lives.

While the Covid-19 epidemic is active, public worship at St Martin’s Church is suspended, in common with the rest of the Church of England.  Please visit our website www.stmartins-ruislip.org where you can watch a pre-recorded Mass for this Sunday and other opportunities for prayer.

While we are unable to gather together in the church building, the Church’s life of prayer and faith will have to continue in our own homes.  In this way we share the experience of thousands of our brothers and sisters in Christ who worship and practise their faith under persecution.  Below, you will find the references for this Sunday’s scripture readings so that you can either gather together  at home with your family, or be alone and read the scriptures carefully and reflectively.  Keep a time of silence after each reading, then move on to a time of prayer and intercession using the  intentions below.  You might like to conclude with the Lord’s Prayer, the Hail Mary and the Grace.

      Reflection: the human spirit

The human spirit is a precious possession: a source of energy and extraordinary resilience.

However, external forces can cause it to soar or to sink….

Sadness weighs it down; joy raises it up.

Criticism erodes it; praise builds it up.

Failure shrinks it; success enlarges it.

Despair causes it to wilt; hope breathes new life into it.

Rejection wounds it; acceptance heals it.

Hatred poisons it; love purifies it.

Fear cripples it; prayer strengthens and calms it.

Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on us.
